Freedom of Expression - a gift for writer/bloggers in an independent nation

What does freedom of expression mean to me as a blogger/ writer?

The question reminds me of the case of a cartoonist who was put behind the bars for mocking a political leader. It also reminds me of several writers who are banned from their countries, whose work are banned for creating social or political unrest. It reminds me of books that are criticized to be meaningless, thoughtless, etc.

I always think that as a writer (if I ever become one) if I put my heart and soul into a work and publish, how important acceptance to me is.
I often go back and forth the comment section and at times cringe at negative comments. However, they do not stop me or dissuade me as I have my freedom to express.

When at work, we often write keeping in mind the responses. However, at blog, most of us write whatever pleases us.

The thought, that each word, statement, opinion, paragraph can be scrutinized, questioned or criticized will probably leave all of us as very frustrated bloggers.

We often take the freedom of expression provided to us bloggers as granted. However, I believe it is a great liberty and it comes with a lot of responsibilities.

As responsible bloggers we should aptly categorize our content, mark it (A) if it contains adult content. We must give a brief about what our work is supposed to be about, we can always edit the brief. As a blogger, we all should be mindful of other’s work and do not indulge in plagiarism. Abusive language, inappropriate remakes, false allegations are also things that we need to be sure about.

I believe that it is better to scrutinize and censor our content that having anyone else doing it. Therefore, we should accept the gift of freedom of expression gracefully and utilize it wisely. Do you agree?

  1. Yes, the moment we start maintaining a blog and publish something in the wide open for anyone to read, it gives us a lot of responsibility on what we are writing and what social impact it might have (marking it accordingly is obviously a part of it)

  2. Self-censor is the best form of freedom of expression as along with freedom comes the responsibility.

  3. The best thing democracy has given to its citizen, freedom of expression. Till as a write not getting manipulated himself/herself or manipulating others through his/her thoughts it's ok.

  4. I agree with you. Freedom of expression also puts some conditions and responsibility on us. We should follow them.

  6. I agree with your thoughts on freedom. But, I feel that we have to constantly fight so that authorities do not infringe on our freedom. Case in point is the indecent arrest of Aseem Trivedi which was such a shame and feel there is attempt to restrict our free flow of words and information.
