Letters unsent - letter to my best friend/s

Dear Best Friend,

Or should I say best friends? It has always been a challenge for me to describe best friend as singular. In my journey called life I have shifted many places and each new place has given me a new set of friends. Amongst this each new set of friend, I have somehow many to always find at least one best friend which has left me with a list of best friends rather than one particular best friend.

One of you best friends always questioned and criticized me on this point and did not understand how “Best” which is superlative can be plural. I have wanted to explain you that as many people I meet in every new space, I leave behind a trail of familiar faces, happy memories and friends who have set out to different journey than mine.

I remember being best friends with one of you back in my kindergarten but then I went to hostel and we never wrote to each other. Last I got to know about you was when you had your first child, I had just begun my college then.

You, the two girls I met in my mid-school. Three of us have managed to stick to each other so far. However, at various points we drifted apart and lost touch, creating spaces between us which other best friend filled.

You are the friend from school whom I got close to much later in my college days. Oh we had a lot of fun! I agree…but I wish you didn’t make it complicated by liking me or at least pretending to like me. We were pretty good as best friends you know. I wish you understood that.

Here you are, my flat mate for several years and what I thought to be my best friend once. Very soon you proved me wrong and what remained between us was a love-hate relationship till we finally drifted apart.

My best friend from opposite sex. You really confused me. I really thought we were best friends till you found someone to love. You suddenly disconnected all cords and left me wondering on what went wrong.

There you come…my questioning best friend. A best friend who really wanted to be one till the end and especially the only one. You are a really good person to be best friends with. I can’t thank you enough for difference you made to my life, but crap we fell in love. Who the heck falls in love with her best friend? I did! And that royally screwed it up. Well…we are still friends, good friends but I am hopeful that we can get back to being best friends again.

My flatmate, my friend from school, my best friend…you make it comfortable to live through it all. We have a mutual understanding and life is good with you. I can speak to you all that I want and it is fun to have you around. Let’s hope it remains the same.

My sister best friend, you are my cousin but as close as my real sister could be. I love you girl. You technically don’t fall in the best friend category because you are a cousin but in practice you are really one of the best friends I have ever had. I love my time with you.

Well, there you are…all of you. Though, you are many of you and not one but each one is special. You have made me what I am today. You have been there at one point of time when I really needed you and I hope I have been there for you too.

I promise to be there with you whenever you need me.

Love,
Your friend

  1. This is an honest account. It shows to us that best friends is really an elusive thing in this world but they do make us what we are...

  4. Hmm...I don't make any special efforts in making friends. I am closed in my own world. But my close friend from my school days still makes it a point to reach out to me often, that too proactively. And, of course, i do react to her pro activeness. Yes, am among those who can single out their besties.

  5. From the heart and so true .We make so many friends/best friends in life and then when we move on we slowly lose touch and find new people. It's not that we don't care but it just happens.

  7. This is so true. I have a few best friends rather than just one too. People change and people move away. Letters and now emails help us to connect over miles. I guess that is life!
